💡 Is good system design just about making something work?
I’ve seen this happen so many times…
A business application works fine when there are only a few hundred records.
Then the business grows.
More employees.
More applicants.
More customers.
More orders.
More transactions.
And suddenly…
🐌 The data list takes forever to load.
The first instinct is usually:
“We need a better server.”
Maybe.
But sometimes, the problem isn't the server at all.
It’s how the system is handling all that information.
Here are some simple ways to improve it:
✅ Show information in smaller batches
Instead of loading thousands of records at once, show a manageable number and let users move to the next page.
✅ Make the system search smarter
Instead of searching through everything every time, make it focus only on the information that matters.
✅ Only load what people actually need
If the screen only needs to show 8 pieces of information, there’s no reason to load 30.
✅ Make frequently used searches faster
The system can be designed to find commonly searched information much more quickly.
✅ Don't make the whole page reload every time
Some information can be updated in the background, so users don't have to sit and wait for the entire page to refresh.
✅ Remove unnecessary work happening behind the scenes
Sometimes the system is doing a lot of things that the user never sees—and doesn't actually need.
The goal?
Make the system feel fast and easy to use.
Because here's the thing…
A business system shouldn't make people wait for the information they need to do their job.
Even a few seconds doesn't sound like much.
But multiply that by dozens of searches…
Every day.
Every employee.
Every month.
And suddenly, that “little delay” becomes a productivity problem.
💡 Good system design isn't just about making something work.
It's about making it continue to work well as the business grows.
That's one of the things I love about working with business systems—finding those little bottlenecks that people have simply learned to live with… and figuring out how to make them better.
